For a French passport, a white background is forbidden — the exact opposite of the US rule.
France draws a sharp line between a visa and a national document, and the backgrounds are different. For a French passport or national ID card, a white background is explicitly forbidden — the requirement is a plain light color such as light blue or light grey. This is the reverse of what every US photo counter does by default, and it is the most common reason a French passport photo taken in America is refused.
For a French Schengen visa, the standard is the European one: 35 to 40mm wide, with the face filling 70 to 80% of the frame, on a plain light background. What gets these photos rejected
- White is forbidden for a French passport or CNI. Light blue or light grey is required.
- The visa and the passport are different standards — white is acceptable for a visa but not a national document.
- The head must be completely bare for national documents, headbands included.
- Long-stay French visa applications can require three photographs rather than one.
- If you are applying in France rather than from the US, an approved French photographer or booth code may be required — check with ANTS before you travel.
