New Zealand passport & visa photos in Tucson, AZ
One requirement reverses what every US photo counter does by default.
New Zealand passport photos carry a requirement that trips up almost every American studio: the background must not be white. New Zealand asks for a background that is "plain and light, but not white" — the opposite of the US standard. A photo shot on the white seamless every US photo counter uses will be rejected on sight.
The second difference is how the head is measured. New Zealand sizes the head at 80% of the image height including hair, not chin-to-crown as Australia and the US do. Get the measurement basis wrong and the framing is wrong. We shoot New Zealand work on a light grey background at the correct proportion, for both printed applications and online uploads.

What gets these photos rejected
- White backgrounds are rejected. This is the single most common New Zealand failure from a US studio.
- Head sizing includes hair and is measured as a percentage, not in millimetres.
- Headbands count as head coverings and are not allowed.
- The back of one print must be witnessed and signed by a New Zealand passport holder — that is not something the photographer does.
- Immigration New Zealand visa photos are a separate standard from passports: 35×45mm with the face at 70–80%, and ears must be visible.
