United Kingdom passport & visa photos in Tucson, AZ
A five-millimetre window on head height, and a one-month expiry most people miss.
UK passport photos are 45mm high by 35mm wide, and HM Passport Office allows the head only 29 to 34 millimetres from crown to chin. That is a five-millimetre window, and mechanical sizing errors inside it are the most common reason a UK photo comes back.
The requirement people miss entirely: a UK passport photo must have been taken within the last month. Not six months, as with most countries — one. A photo you had taken in the spring will not be accepted in the autumn. There is also a quiet difference between formats: printed photos need a plain cream or light grey background, while digital submissions call for a plain light-colored one.

What gets these photos rejected
- One month, not six. The UK expiry window is far shorter than almost every other country.
- Printed background is cream or light grey, not white. A white print does not match the printed specification.
- The 29–34mm head window is narrow — a 5mm range on a 45mm print.
- First adult passports, child passports, and replacements for lost or stolen documents need a countersignatory to certify the back of one photo.
- Children under one do not need their eyes open; under six they need not look directly at the camera.
